Burana Tower

Burana Tower

Burana Tower was built in 11 century in the centre of Balasagun - a thriving city on the Great Silk Road. Many traders used to come to that place to exchange their goods and stay for a night. At that time Tower was 45 meters high but because of the earthquake in 15 century part of it fell down. People used the tower as a sign for travelers and traders, as a watching tower and as a place to call local people to pray. After the earthquake in the 15 century people were scared to stay in the city. They thought that God cursed them. That is way they left the city in a hurry and did not have the majority of their belongings. Our archeologist found many artifacts there and part of them was taken to Russia, but you can see some of them in a local museum. The clay houses in the city melted because of time and now you can see only the tower and a hill nearby that is supposed to be khan's palace.

Also you may see there a cemetery of Stone Warriors - Balbals. They were found in different places of Kyrgyzstan and taken to this place in order to save them for next generations. In the 7 century people used to create them for honored dead warriors.

Nearby you will see ancient petrogliphs - stone paintings. Some of them are from the 8 century B.C. They also were taken to the Balasagun city to be shown for tourists and travelers as a heritage of the former times.
